ROME (AFP) - A blast of Siberian weather dubbed "The Beast from the East" sent temperatures plunging across much of Europe early on Tuesday (Feb 27) as commuters braced themselves for another day of travel chaos.

Freezing temperatures have claimed at least 10 lives across the continent in the last three days with particularly acute fears for rough sleepers and the eldery during the bitterly cold snap.SNOW IN THE MEDITERRANEAN In Poland, where at least four people have died of exposure since Saturday, temperatures dropped overnight to minus 12 deg Celsius while parts of Lithuania, which has had three deaths, saw the mercury fall below minus 20.

Temperatures in France are forecast to drop to minus 10 deg C and feel as low as minus 18 deg C over the coming days.

Three cold-related deaths have been documented so far.

An Arctic front, which Britain's tabloids have christened "The Beast from the East", has swept in from Russia, causing widespread travel disruption and school closures.

The frozen temperatures in Europe are in stark contrast to the Arctic itself which is experiencing an unusually warm period despite it being the depths of winter when the sun never even rises above the horizon.

Meteorologists have documented temperatures above freezing in some parts of the Arctic, causing astonishment among many scientists.

"The Arctic is having an off-the-charts heatwave this week," the European Geosciences Union wrote in a tweet.

Yet hundreds of miles further south, temperate Rome woke to its first snowfall in six years on Monday thanks to the Polar Vortex.

The mercury dipped as low as minus 4 deg C early Tuesday morning according to the Italian Meteorological Service.

A string of major football matches, including Italian Cup bouts on Wednesday between Juventus/Atalanta and AC Milan/Lazio, could be postponed if the cold weather

Record colds but I'm sure Al Gore and the rest of the limousine/lear jet liberals are toasty.

BTW, the beast from the east has defeated more than a few armies.

This is basically weather from the low teens to the high twenties. Do these homes not have furnaces?

Its much colder then that. Go to the article and convert some of the temperatures stated from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Of course somehow they had to blame it on global warming.

Outside of a mountain reading of -40 the coldest I saw was -20C which is -4F. Hardly cause for alarm if your home has a furnace. Here in Wisconsin it takes temps of -10F or lower for highs and high winds for schools to consider closing.

"...Celsius to Fahrenheit..."

Even if we are talking -20* Celsius that equals -4* Fahrenheit.
People still shouldn’t be dying in their homes under those conditions.

A guy I work with spent some time in England. The cost of heating buildings there is so high that many people go about their houses in heavy jackets.

They have furnaces, but can they afford to turn them on is the question?

The heating is a joke (according to our standards) in most homes in Italy. If you don’t have an independent thermostat or a fireplace, the central heating is turned off after 10 pm. In really cold spells they can run it close to midnight. I spent winter months there and was wearing my heavy coat around the house. High electric and gas bills prevent most Italians to adeguatly warm their homes.

Any chance this is due to the lack of sunspots sending solar flares that warm up the air as they pass over our poles?

I walked about 5 miles in Kiev today. It is COLD. 11F (-13C). With wind. And snow. 5 layers plus a winter coat.
