Roger Goodell Expected to Demand Millions of Dollars From Jerry Jones
New York Times ^ | 2/26/18 | Ken Belson

With the support of many N.F.L. owners, Commissioner Roger Goodell is prepared to escalate his public feud with Jerry Jones, the owner of the Dallas Cowboys and long one of the most influential people in the league, by ordering him to pay millions of dollars for his efforts to derail negotiations to renew Goodell’s contract and for his outspoken defense of a star player who was suspended, according to five league officials with direct knowledge of the situation.

The punishment will be issued in the coming weeks by Goodell, who will declare that Jones’s actions were detrimental to the league, which rarely shows such acute signs of acrimony among owners and the commissioner’s office. Goodell has been reluctant to be seen as exacting retribution for the way Jones tried to sabotage his contract talks, but he was urged to bring the penalties by several owners who believed that Jones had crossed an unspoken boundary by threatening his colleagues.

In November, Jones hired the high-profile lawyer David Boies and said he was prepared to sue the six owners on the league’s compensation committee, which had been working for months on extending Goodell’s contract. Jones also lobbied loudly for running back Ezekiel Elliott not to be penalized, and reportedly tried to influence league officials deciding his case. Elliott had been suspended by the league for six games before the season after the N.F.L. investigated domestic-assault allegations.

Jones will be ordered to pay the legal fees that the committee incurred defending itself, as well as the legal expenses the N.F.L. spent defending its decision to suspend Elliott.

A spokesman for the Cowboys said the team was unaware of the impending penalties and did not immediately have a comment. A spokesman for the N.F.L. said the league had no comment.

According to the NY Times, Goodell is expected to order Jerry Jones to pay millions of dollars for the crime of speaking out against Goodell.

Only time will tell if this will actually come to pass. We will see if NFL supports free speech for everyone, or only for people that Goodell agrees with.

It wasn’t the speaking out. It was the threatening to sue to stop the contract negotiations he had already voted to allow to happen. He engaged the lawyers, and made a public spectacle.

If you attack the king you’d better kill him. Jerry Jones didn’t kill him. Not that Goodell didn’t deserve to be attacked, not that his compensation for abysmal performance isn’t disgusting, not that the NFL isn’t going to hell on a hand truck, but now comes the part where Goodell exacts his retribution.

I have to admit, I never thought I’d see Jerry Jones losing to Roger Goodell. What in the world happened to those owners?

Couldn’t it be countered that Goodell’s actions in accepting fake social justice outrage instead of promoting football was detrimental to the league? I mean, just look at his actions as compared to TV revenues.

This really is insane. Let's see: Goodell allows the players to behave in a way that damages the NFL and is causing a massive loss of revenue.

Goodell fines Jerry Jones for pointing this out.

Yeah, makes sense. The NFL can't die fast enough.

And by voting to keep him the other league owners have given Goodell a free pass to do whatever he wants.

I don't understand why the other owners are taking sides with Goodell. He is the reason why so many long time fans are disgusted with the NFL. Jerry Jones is a fine owner looking out for his team. He is also justified to have a negative opinion of Goodell and the continuation of this clown as NFL Commissioner

They got sucked into the progressive SJW Borg somehow and I’m sure it has to involve money, otherwise they’d know they were about to lose their collective shirts over declining ad revenue and ticket sales. So who’s paying them? Have they gone full fascist? Can’t be our own government, not with Trump at the helm, can it? Soros? It’s surreal, even more so than the same thing happening to NASCAR years before. The networks just avoid showing empty stands and go on about their business as if it’s just as popular as ever.

if I were a sponsor I would take legal action against the league for purposely devaluing their product. Their ads now reach less people, last season and in the future. To me it’s fraud.

Yeah he’ll get it. The NFL, like the other leagues, has plenty of rules about going against the shield in public. First rule from The Godfather, never disagree with family in front of strangers. Normally NFL owners are good at keeping in line, especially once Al Davis got too old for drama, but the rules are there and the fines can be steep.

The owners who sided with Goodall over Jones will regret that decision if they already don’t. Goodall did serious damage to the NFL brand and he will continue to do damage as long as he stays the commissioner.

This is the New NFL. Kinder, gentler sport with a heart.

How can a conservative support an operation that is dedicated
to pushing dubious social causes?  That ain't sports.  That's a mass sashay.
