he choice in the 1850s was quite stark: emigrate and live, or stay and die. It is estimated that during this time period, one half of the Irish population either left for America, England or Australia or died. Interestingly, there are about 35 million Americans whose primary descent is Irish, while Ireland (north and south) has a population of about six million.

When it comes to Irish-American songs, I'm partial to Bing Crosby's rendition of Who Threw The Overalls In Mrs. Murphy's Chowder?. I like Who Put the Benzadrine in Mrs. Murphy's Ovaltine (aka Who Put the Nembutals in Mr. Murphy's Overalls?)

Cleese would be crucified today for half of his skits. Benny Hill would be right next to him.

My understanding was that Ireland went from a population of ~6Million in 1840 to a population of ~2million in 1860 and most of the natural increase through 1900 also emigrated. More left Ireland than died in the Famine.

True.
Yet he remains a committed lefty/liberal.
Makes no sense.
