In 19th Century literature, it was apparently common for women to have multiple suitors, until she accepted a marriage proposal from one. Then again, it was also the case that she was supposed to remain chaste before marriage.

It was easier remaining a virgin until marriage when you were married by 15.

I'm wondering if it might not be better for society for women to get back to getting married young? Maybe not 15, but preferably by 22, when she finishes college? That way, she has more of her prime fertile years ahead of her.

Fifteen was pretty young, even in those days. Most of Jane Austen's heroines were at least 18, and one was 25.
