If nobody else complained or noticed any “pungent” odor it is probably that the man was sensitive to something the woman ate. Some people seem to excrete odors from foods and seasonings like garlic, curries, and asparagus than others.

Our last house we had Pakis move in next door. Among them was an old woman you could smell coming. Not kidding. She touched me on the arm once and I had to take a shower. It was that bad. There’s no way I would be able to sit on the same plane with her let alone next to her.

Or more likely, the others were suffering in silence, cowed by very idea of complaining about a woman who was foreign AND black. The guy who sat closest decided to pipe up.
And changing coffees? Easier just to change chicks.
