Churchill was imo the second greatest man of the 20th century.

I also believe Churchill was right to refuse any negotiations with Hitler. However Buchanan was not totally wrong either.

Hitler would have seized the old Prussia and any other part of Poland which was German Speaking. He also would have taken huge areas of the Soviet Union, mainly the best farmland and oil and mineral production.

Now he might have wanted influence in other countries but did not want to permanently occupy them. He wanted the Rhineland, Alsace and Loraine and part of Czechoslovakia.

He would have left the British Isles alone as well as most of Western Europe.

Then he want to build his 1000 year Reich. Huge buildings, magnificent sports arenas, Train stations, autobahns etc.

It would have cost a lot of people their freedom or forced them to move but it might still have been preferable to100 million dead.

Your post #12 is interesting. And that’s one reason I value Free Republic. There are many thoughtful posts here.

But I must respectfully disagree with your comment above. It has been said that Napoleon only wanted those provinces that bordered France. But as French Empire expanded, so did those provinces that bordered the Empire.

The same applies to the Third Reich. Hitler wanted all of Europe. Eventually the British Isles would have been on the menu. There were even plans to invade and occupy neutral Switzerland (Operation Tannenbaum).

I forgot to ask in my first reply to you...who was, in your opinion, the greatest man of the 20th century?

FDR would certainly be a candidate. In less than four years he mobilized America to defeat both Hitler and Tojo. That’s no small accomplishment! But on the other hand FDR greatly expanded the welfare state. We are paying the price of that error today.

So who then? My vote would be for Ronald Reagan. Am I right?
