To be fair, Augustus was quite good, which is a big part of why the Emperor role stayed.

I agree re: Augustus. And there were other “good” emperors as well... Marcus Aurelius and Constantine come to mind. But Rome had long since ceased to be a true republic, and had become decadent and corrupt.
