I used a live trap baited with an aromatic sauce for fish - caught the whole family plus some other critters. You can do with the live trap as you choose - dropping in a river works. In my case, I made sure I had an expressway or two and 10 or so miles btwn my house and where I let them go in a wooded area. It worked out fine.

Live traps are the best as if you catch a kitty or a fox or non property destructing critter you can let ‘em go.
If it is a nuisance varmint animal you can then deal with it in a humane way.
