England. Penalty kicks. Big stage. It used to be a foregone conclusion of doom for the Three Lions. But not anymore.

England edged Colombia in penalty kicks 4-3 after a 1-1 draw through 120 minutes, reaching the quarterfinals in dramatic fashion. Colombia center back Yerry Mina's 93rd-minute penalty kick forced extra time, after Harry Kane's second-half penalty kick had seemingly put England in control, and the two played through a scoreless extra 30 minutes to go to the shootout round, where England has notoriously failed.

Yerry Mina's 93rd-minute penalty kick

That wasn’t a PK.

Heck of a game. I figured an actual brawl was going to erupt. Instead, it was just a flurry of yellow.

Colombia was dominant after the goal, but for some reason when it came time for the second extra period, they took their foot off the gas and played for PKs.

So Columbia scored the tying goal in the 93rd minute of a 90-minute game.

And then the teams went to those stupid penalty kicks to decide the game.

There are so many things wrong with this sport that can be summed up in just these two sentences.

Has the Colombia goalie applied for asylum in the US yet?

I think Croatia is the best team of the four on their side of the bracket.

The final 4 should be France, Belgium, Croatia and England. Looking forward to England/Belgium final with England taking the Cup.

The referee had his hands full today but the game settled down eventually. Should have been even more cautions than there were.

I’m not so sure England gets past Sweden.

Yep, Belgium-Brazil is going to be a good one, I can’t say yet, who I think will win. Brazil’s been good, but they hardly look like the dominant Brazil teams of past years.

If Cavani can’t go, France should have an easy time with Uruguay.

Yup. All that and more. Soccer’s an awesome game. Not a stupid game where the morons run around protected by helmets and pads and rests after every 5 secs of running around. Now that’s a stupid stupid game.

No, they played 30 minutes of extra time before the penalty kicks.

At least all of the players stand at attention and honor their national anthems.
