New Michigan law removes basic skills test for teachers
Detroit Free Press ^ | 7/2/2018 | Lorri Higgins

Prospective Michigan teachers won't have to take the SAT anymore to be certified in Michigan, a move that might help attract more teachers to the profession and help districts struggling with classroom vacancies.

The SAT has been the basic skills exam teachers have had to take since last year, but Gov. Rick Snyder signed legislation last week eliminating the Michigan law that requires a basic skills exam in the first place.

"The basic skills test ... is not a strong indicator of how successful a teacher will be," said Sen. Marty Knollenberg, R-Troy, who sponsored the legislation, which passed the Michigan Legislature earlier this month. The law received widespread bipartisan support when it was before lawmakers, and goes into effect Sept. 25.

Knollenberg, the vice chair of the Senate Education Committee, said the panel has heard repeatedly about how difficult it is to get people to enter the teaching profession.

"To me, the good teachers — they're inspired and have passion. Why should they be burdened with a test that isn't relevant to the subject matter they teach? It's a test. It doesn't measure enthusiasm. It doesn't measure passion. It doesn't measure competency in the subject matter."

(snip)

Kate Walsh, president of the Washington, D.C.-based National Council on Teacher Quality, criticized the decision Friday. She said she doesn't have a problem with eliminating the SAT since it's not a basic skills exam.

But, "you do need to assess if candidates have basic skills. Can they read and write and are they mathematically literate? There should be some entry standard that’s objective," Walsh said.

"It allows programs to admit people who are wholly unqualified, and who will never be able to pass the subject matter exams."

Besides, the job of the teacher is Leftist indoctrination of students, who cares if they can't read, write or do arithmetic.

Whew! That’s a relief.

Having teachers that know anything is racist.

And dangerous: Did you know that the Nazis had teachers that actually knew things? Trump thinks teachers should know stuff too.

#ResistKnowledgeNow.

I’d say, “dumbing down to the lowest common denominator” but Michigan teachers wouldn’t understand.

Otis Mathis, former president of the Detroit Board of Education, had a “learning disability.” He could not write a coherent sentence. He was an excellent role model for Detroit students by demonstrating how to be successful and illiterate at the same time. He was elected president of the board unanimously. He was forced to resign, not because of incompetence, but because of allegations he masturbated in front of superintendent Teresa Gueyser during routine meetings. Why did Teresa not just get up and walk out?
The SAT was racist. This ruling will have a negative effect on Detroit’s high standards. They believe they can have their pudding and not eat their meat. It’s all just another brick in the wall.

When I was in prep school, everyone tool the PSAT and the SAT.
Surely these aren’t the same tests. Are there different levels for these tests?

Yet, if the biz/tech/science people in the town/city/State were to offer up their knowledge/know-how (even free of charge) they’d be spinning on a dime w/, “They haven’t tested/got a license to show they can TEACH good.”

Probably because they can’t hire and keep teachers. My husband was told that parts of Michigan only hire local residents because after one winter nobody stays.
