I am a Retired MD, spelunker as a teenager in New Mexico, and NAUI Divemaster 20 years ago. The answer was pretty obvious from the beginning. You cant take a kid some 20 feet under water 100 feet or so of overhead obstruction and risk them panicking and losing their regulator or facemask. You pretty much have to intubate them and duct tape the regulator to their head while they are too sedated to move. Put some ophthalmic grease in their eyes and tape them shut and go for it.
