Baldwin Park [CA] American Legion Post Burglarized

Thieves broke into a Baldwin Park American Legion post, an organization that helps veterans and their families. Those thieves cleared out a rifle rack and a safe.

Somebody broke in through a side door and headed straight to the office — breaking a door off its hinges to get in.

Inside the safe was about $3,000. Money to pay for their veterans programs, feed community members and buy presents for kids who might not have a Christmas. “We have events such as 9/11, Thanksgiving, Christmas. And that was money for them,” said Avalar.

Also in the safe were important documents. Deeds.

The post has served San Gabriel Valley veterans in the building since 1961.

Thursday night, a veteran volunteered to re-hang the door to the office. And in the ballroom, a pro-wrestling show. The post rents out the room often to raise money for their veterans programs, which they need now more than ever.

“One of the things we are gonna need now is a better security system,” said Pouliot.

A classic soft target operation. These people knew exactly where to go to get what they wanted. I suspect they were in and out in a s few as ten minutes. Because this post finances its operations by renting the hall to various functions scoping out the floor plan was easy. However, the speed the intruders moved at to get money and valuables argues that they had some inside assistance. This post need to carefully look at all employees or people hired casually for the last year. Beyond that they need to have money raising events to pay for a god security system (one with a really loud klaxon horn) and some steel burglar doors. To bad all around, this post appears to be very involved with self help assistance programs and not just Meet, Drink, Eat, and Retreat.

Agree. They knew ahead of time and/or had inside help.

Not much of a “safe”
