Dear FRiend. My Mother is 85 with dementia. Two months ago she didn’t know me. Last month she remembered. I see her again Tuesday. She’s my Mother. I’ll love her regardless

As the power of attorney for my mother, I was thrust DNR orders when her condition begin to worsen in late spring of her 92nd year. Because she was of sound mind, we came to the same conclusion: I would not sign the orders because we could not know the exact circumstances under which it might be used. While she was a saintly woman and ready to meet her maker, I would not be responsible for starving her to death or letting her die of thirst.

When she lost the ability to communicate, the only thing I would consent to was an IV drip to substitute for a feeding tube and this only after much consultation, thought and prayer to know that is what she would want.

Mercifully, she passed away in her sleep only a few days after that decision-- long enough to know it wasn't the cause, short enough to know that she didn't linger long in that agony before going home to her creator.

Yes, it cost us a little more than $1000 extra, but a small price to pay to know I wasn't playing God.
