Concrete triclinium from Herculaneum. Astonishingly well-preserved, considering Vesuvius. I suppose the post in the center is for a decorative arrangement, or maybe a lamp.

That post probably held the table. A large slab of marble, perhaps.

Maybe, but the diners wouldn’t have been able to reach it. I’m thinking servants carrying trays makes more sense.

I’m really enjoying your “Ancient Gastronomy” posts. Thanks. I’m sure you have read of “vomitoriums”, of which the Romans availed themselves.......so they could indulge more. Old form of anorexia, I assume.

Bulimia is when one throws up. Anorexia is when one doesn’t eat at all. However, the point of Romans’ vomitoria - they say - was to keep eating so as to enjoy more food than one could naturally take in at one time. The point of bulimia is to lose weight.

I knew as soon as I posted that. Thanks for the correction.
My recent stroke is slightly affecting my cognitive abilities. Getting old isn’t for wimps.

My mother says, “Getting old is not for the weak.” Same point. Best wishes for recovery from your stroke and continued enjoyment of your life.

Eating while lying one one’s stomach or side & propped up on one’s elbows doesn’t sound very appetizing.

The women guests sat in straight back chairs. They probably didn’t get indigestion as much.

There were women in those days? I recline and go to sleep about an hour after dinner.

There were women in those days?

Just one of those myths, don't give it any credence.

Like all the other mythology from ancient Rome and Greece. Sort of like today.

There have always been a lot of stories kicking around. Did you hear about Odysseus and Calypso?

I have a vomitorium too.. I call it a bathroom. The indulge more part doesn’t work so well though.
