Do they ever officially recess anymore. If they do, he could fire Sessions and appoint another in the middle of the night, before they could object. Recess appointments don’t have to be approved, I’ve heard. Correct me if I’m wrong.

The Senate has agreed to not officially recess to prevent a recess appointment. The thing about not confirming is only temporary, too. The recess appointment is good only until the end of the current Congress, which is Jan. 2, 2019.

After Trump was elected Mitch McConnell went to the Press and stated he would never allow the Senate to officially recess and allow President Trump the ability to make any recess appointments.

As of now McConnell has used parliamentary tricks to keep the Senate in session for just that reason.
