FULL TITLE: John McCain dies at 81: War hero, father and presidential candidate had been fighting aggressive brain cancer since last summer - and leaves behind a proud legacy of public service
Senator John McCain has died aged 81 after a battle with brain cancer.
On Friday his family announced the veteran senator was to discontinue treatment for cancer and his office announced he passed away surrounded by his wife Cindy, and family, at home at 4:28pm on Saturday.
A statement released by his office said: 'Senator John Sidney McCain III died at 4:28pm on August 25, 2018. With the senator when he passed were his wife Cindy and their family.
'At his death, he had served the United States of America faithfully for 60 years.'
A hearse was seen leaving the McCain family home shortly after 7pm local time.
His daughter, Meghan McCain, led the tributes.
She said: 'My father is gone, and I miss him as only an adoring daughter can. But in this loss, and in this sorrow, I take comfort in this: John McCain, hero of the republic and to his little girl, wakes today to something more glorious than anything on this earth. Today the warrior enters his true and eternal life, greeted by those who have gone before him, rising to meet the Author of All Things.
'The dream is ended: this is the morning.'

I met McCain in April 2007 at a campaign rally in Tempe, AZ. I wasn’t a fan of his. I showed up just out of curiosity. After the speech while he was greeting the crowd I got to shake his hand (not enthusiastically) and I asked him to his face — ‘Senator, why did you oppose the Bush tax cuts ?’. He seemed taken aback. Wasn’t expecting it. Said something to the effect he wasn’t for deficits and the tax cuts were going to greatly add to the deficits and quickly moved on.
I have said some mean things about McCain over the years. Today though my thoughts are with the family. It’s a difficult time and my sincere condolences to them.
Body must have begun to stink or something.
Meanwhile he gets brain cancer gives us obamacare. if you and I had that...we would have been dead within months.
I am not a brain cancer expert. But more than a year seems like lazy brain cancer.

I think he did die today, but no way did they stop treatment just yesterday it was more like weeks ago. Last few weeks with this cancer you are pretty much comatose, no pain, can’t eat, talk or move, you just sleep sleep sleep.
