Alabama ban on yoga in schools questioned

labama for 25 years has banned yoga in public schools, and a Hindu activist says it's time to change that.

Rajan Zed of Nevada in a statement Friday said the state is doing a disservice to its students by denying them the opportunity to learn yoga.

The Alabama Board of Education in 1993 voted to prohibit yoga, hypnosis and meditation in schools. The ban was pushed by conservative groups.

The ban got new attention when a state document circulated this week listing yoga — along with games like tag — among "inappropriate" activities in gym class.

Alabama Education Superintendent Eric Mackey said the document is old and should not have been released.

However, a department spokesman said there have been no discussions yet about reversing the yoga ban.

Yoga is a great after school activity. Meditatioin if it is straight meditation without the adjectives, would be good and would help with the concentration but it would have to be okay with a large majority of the parents or the reactions would do more harm than good.

“Rajan Zed of Nevada in a statement Friday said the state is doing a disservice to its students by denying them the opportunity to learn yoga.”

Why does a complaint from a Hindu activist who lives in Nevada have ANY bearing on public education in Alabama?

And no one is “denying” anyone an opportunity to learn anything. Last I heard Americans are free to learn about whatever they care to learn about. In fact, there are probably local churches that offer yoga classes, along with many gyms. Lots and lots of opportunities.

The fact this guy is complaining proves that he considers it a religious outreach, which is exactly why it should not be offered.

Yes. It shouldn’t be in American schools unless they eliminate the mantra / chanting crap. Too new-age, eastern religion studd. Slippery slope.

No negotiations with activists.

THAT should be a school board policy.

Agreed. Screw yoga. We need yogurt not yoga in schools based on how fat everyone is. But they can keep all the yoga in the gas stations where all the I injuns around here work. Dot vs feather? Most sound like they have a part time job working Microsoft tech support anyway.

Do I have to say joking?

You sound like Mooshelle Obama. She made sure that the government gave MILLIONs to the muslim owner of Chobani Yogurt to put their yogurt in all the schools.

What a tiny kerfuffle.

I’m an Alabama parent. Well, my last kid just graduated this year. So I asked him. He said he’s not lost a wink of sleep over it.

If he didn’t learn yoga is no big deal to either of us. I’d ask my daughter, but she’s out with friends. Still, I think she doesn’t care either.

yoga is a physical part of expressing a recognized religion. No bible class, no yoga.

What were the 'conservative groups'? Religious?

It's 'conservative groups' like this that make conservatives look like morons.
