[...] because he had washing machines installed at his school this summer to deter bullying and embarrassment for his students, who didn’t want anyone to know that their families couldn’t afford to wash their school uniforms.

Gee, I guess that now that those bullies can't bully those poor kids about their clothes, they'll leave them alone now, right?

Yeah, that's really believable: Thuggish bullies beating up kids to steal their milk money because they "feel like it" because the school administrators are scared sh*tless to discipline those bullies because their uniforms are slightly soiled or smelly.

Yeah, right.

I may be no expert on schoolyard or after-school bullying (being about six inches taller and 50 lbs heavier than most other kids may have helped - so did having four older brothers on the schoolyard who were built like quarterbacks), but this will NOT solve the REAL problem.

Regards,

Feed them at school, wash clothes at school.

Never deal with the true issue.

These are children who live disrupted lives and need to be taken away from the people who are not taking care of them. They would be better off in an orphanage, and there could learn to be productive civilized people.

Can the family afford water? Yes. Could they buy some detergent? I imagine. If not, let the principal raise some money for that. Do they have a tub? Probably. Do they have somewhere to hang the clothes to dry? Yes. In the old days, that's all you needed. No machine to wash. No machine to dry.

Self-sufficiency, or mostly. What a skill! That's probably how grandma did it.

They must be on scholarship at the school? Or do public schools in NJ now require uniforms?

“who didn’t want anyone to know that their families couldn’t afford to wash their school uniforms.”

“The story went viral. Everybody took notice of Cook. Enter Ellen DeGeneres. “When I found out about a high school principal from Newark, New Jersey who is doing incredible things to keep his students in school, I knew I wanted to have him on the show,” DeGeneres said on her talk show.”

THANKS ELLEN, for making sure the bullies know all about it now.

I’m old enough to remember when only destitute kids would get free meals at school. And there was a sense of shame associated with taking this assistance.

if the kids are bullied now, just think what will happen to them when they take off their clothes to toss’em in the washer

It is effing TIME to start a campaign to insist that parents stop having sex until they can afford the next kid. A little breakfast and dinner, clean clothing. Doctors are free already for the poor. There is WIC already. If you can’t wash a kid’s outfit and give him enough underwear for 5 days, you have no business having that child. Why respect these animals by taking away all responsibility from them? It WILL NOT MAKE THEM MORE RESPONSIBLE. Next there will be free daycare outside crack houses and bars.

Academia has lost their focus. The educational system has failed to educate the students.

It is not the responsibility of the schools to feed, clothe, and shelter the students. It’s purpose is to educate them. Teach them reading, writing, and arithmetic so that they can have the tools needed to further educate themselves and make intelligent decisions.

Providing free meals, clothes washing machines, and various computers are not the answers. They are things used by educated people to add value to their lives not a source of academic knowledge.

Give the same things to cavemen and watch what happens. Fail to teach students the academic basics and watch what happens, The outcomes are similar.

We are graduating students today who cannot read or write the King’s English or compute the correct value of two numbers. Like someone said (about a certain NFL quarterback), “He couldn’t spell C-A-T if you spotted him the C and T”.

Take the $50k, buy the kids boxing lessons. I dealt with bullies over and over again in the different schools that I went to because of family issues, and that is what works.

I know that all the reasons these kids need so much is due to their parents neglect etc.

But I think what Mr. Cook is doing is wonderful.

He cannot fix their families or their home situations. But he is doing what he can to help his students.

Bravo.
