We remodeled both bathrooms in the past few years. Main bathroom has a tub. We figured that as the population ages, it made sense to remove the tub in our small master bath and put in a nice sized shower stall, plus it gave us room for a small built in shelf unit.

Best part was, I hired a buddy to do the work. My then college age son was working for him over the summer and did most of the labor. My friend asked if I wanted my kid on payroll and I said “Nope. He’ll work for food.”

Somehow or another it actually worked. We paid him by reducing his college debt repayment to us.

He was in school to become an engineer and I told him I know too many engineers who don’t know how to turn a screwdriver. He worked two summers as a remodeler for some good hands on skill.

Good for him-——he’ll never go hungry with those skills.

His first job after graduating pretty much shows he won’t go hungry. He’ll be making more than me in 2-3 years.

He’s making a boatload of money, driving a cruddy car, living with four other guys in a rented house and paying off his debt fast.

He worked at NASA for two years in a college job and made enough that he covered almost all his expenses himself so it couldn’t have worked out better. But you’re right, he does have some extra skills.

A couple times, I’ve been tight on cash or unemployed and relied on the same skills to put food on the table. It’s nice to not be helpless.

He sounds like a wonderful young man——you must be so proud of him.

When he eventually owns his own home those extra skills will really pay off.

I’m seriously proud of all my kids. He’s the most financially stable but they are all out on their own and making their way.

I think we still cover a couple cell phones on family plan and the ones below 26 are on our insurance.

Hey, they offer, I take. All have jobs that cover health care but why pay when the family plan covers them from me.
