I have been a member of the SCA for decades. Although live steel is carried, this is typically not allowed. Demonstration of lance is right up there with the joust as a no-no.

You may not know this, but Virginia is an open-lance state.

Some people die playing golf, but not many. I would think that the same would be for those who reenact medieval equestrian activities. Bad luck.

Interesting when I lived in Pakistan we went to the Lahore horse show where we watched hours and hours (and hours) of tent-pegging competitions. Comes down from when the Huns would collapse an enemys tent by spearing the pegs with a lance from horseback.

Au contraire.
A petard is a demolition charge.

A petard was an explosive device.

Jousting is the official state sport of Maryland

They were probably more practiced than your average SCA member...
Demonstrations with live steel are very well marshalled and controlled in the SCA.

Well that’s a freak accident and a real shame. Who expects to get impaled on a lance, even if you are playing with a lance? It must have been horrifying for the spectators.

Is it proper for a Medievel re-enactor to be flown to a hospital by anything other than a catapult?
Awful way to die, sincere prayers to the gentleman's family.

the metal-tipped lance hit the ground and flipped, stabbing Barclay's chest.I hate when that happens.

Jousting IS dangerous.
Henry VIII almost died in a jousting accident. Henry II of France did die.

I’ve known Peter for many years. He was a great guy. A retired Lt. Colonel in the Army. This particular activity has been done thousands of times without injury. This was a terrible fluke accident. Prayers for his wife and children.

Yes, this sounds like a freak accident and very sad. Sort of like when the Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin was killed by a stingray.
