"Thats well before the sun is expected to swell into a red giant and consume us in its death throes roughly 5.4 billion years from now"
The sun also is heating up as it ages. In only half a billion years the earth will be outside the habitable zone, and the oceans will begin to evaporate away. We might want to think about moving to Mars then.

...
I think it’s around a 10 percent increase every billion years. And I think there is disagreement about when the Earth will become uninhabitable.

We’ll have the technology to use the Earth as a spaceship and live underground.

Nah, I'd leave in there a little longer. But then again maybe you might think about rolling it over in survivalist stocks.

The earth will leave the habitable zone in about half a billion years. There’s not much disagreement on that. But it may take as log as another half billion years for life to end. It depends on a lot of factors including unknowns such as the Gaia effect. In any case, humans certainly won’t be around anymore anyway. We will either be extinct or evolved into something completely unrecognizable.

Thorium 232, has a half-life of 14.05 billion years. The Sun will kill the Earth before it runs out of heat to run the plates. I imagine the descendants of Mankind will have long populated the galaxy by then as well as a whole bunch of other galaxies as well. Either that or die because of Islam or Socialism.

The study says 1.45 billion years ... Al Gore says 1.67 billion years. It seems like you just dont know who to believe anymore. Gore embarassed himself on a late night talk show some years ago when he stated that the Earth's core is "millions" of degrees. It's actually only about 10-11 thousand(F).

One might try the hydro-plate theory about how it started and progressed. Walt Brown's.
