My DNS settings were changed to use Google's DNS without my knowledge.

Posted on 12/01/2018 4:05:59 PM PST by dhs12345

Hi Fellow Freepers,

I just noticed that all of my computers on my network have had their DNS settings changed (hijacked?) to use Google's DNS servers 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. I am a little annoyed by this because I did not authorize this change nor did I know that it had happened. It must have happened within the past couple of days because my DNS service software/app was complaining that it was broken.

Especially annoying because I have to manually change all of my computers settings back to the default/automatic passed down by the router.

Also, this is a hardware setting. Not a software setting.

Also, how much you wanna bet that when I change it back to automatic, whatever software, etc. that changed it will change it back to Google.

Whats up?

What ISP are you using? Could they be using Google by default and so you get set to that when you connect?

Are you allowing MS Windows to abuse you?

There was a post yesterday (Home Routers Under Attack by NSA-Spawned Malware: What to Do) about a malicious router attack effecting certain brands of routers - NetGear was one of the brands. I think it was said that it was some sort of NSA derivative. Hard reset, a manufacturers' firmware patch, or by a new router were the outcomes as I remember now.

I should point out that the obtain DNS automatically button is deselected and the use the following address is selected with the goggle addresses.

I did not do this. Some software must have done it. Worst of all it was done without my knowledge.

Funny, I was looking into DNS servers this afternoon.

If you’re interested in protecting your privacy, Cloudflare, which is what I use, is highly recommended.

It’s also considered the fastest by many users.

Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 1.0.0.1

OpenDNS is also another good one on privacy in spite of its name.

Here is a good article with various DNS servers addresses...

Probably. Lol.

Happened on both Win 7 and Win 10.

Thanks. I was going to disable upnp tonight when no one is using the Internet.

So, no I have not done this yet.

Set your computers to get DNS from your router (one entry). Set your router to get DNS from your desired sources, in order.

DNS is the service to take a name (blahblah.com) to its actual IP address. I don’t worry about google using that nefariously, though I dislike them for just about everything else. They are reliable and quick, having never seen downtime or delays on their part.

I used OpenDNS. This is how I found out that the DNS settings were changed — my OpenDNS filters weren't working.

All Roku devices are hardcoded to use Google DNS and cannot be changed. The reason for this in part is to enforce location verification for services that have regional restrictions.

I’ll set the PC network settings to automatic and see if it takes and keeps.

My computers should be getting the DNS from the router automatically.

I wouldn’t care but I use OpenDNS for internet filtering. Blocks porn, etc.

I’m sorry about that. I’ve personally never had a problem with it, but I did change it today to Cloudflare because it comes so highly recommended for privacy and speed.

ISP probably made the change.

Most home routers hand out DNS settings via DHCP. The settings they use are usually inherited from the ISP which also usually issues settings via DHCP.

That’s a possibility on the Win 10 computer since I do use location checking but not the Windows 7 computer.

Possible I guess. But I am forcing the DNS addresses to the OpenDNS as described in the below link.

https://use.opendns.com/

Besides, it is a hardware setting.

It has been working flawlessly for years and then all of the sudden, changed.
