An Austin woman who collects litter along central Texas trails and streets hits a milestone on Saturday, when she'll log her 500th "trash hike" in a year and a half. Julie Sondecker started her mission in May 2017 after a trip to the Barton Creek Greenbelt. "Basically just found a bunch of trash, and it just kind of got me fired up," Sondecker said. "It really irritated me to find so much trash in one of my favorite places." The hiker talked to KXAN Thursday, completing her 499th hike around Lady Bird Lake, reusable mesh trash bag in hand. That day last year, she decided to walk and collect trash every day for a year. After her 365th hike in a row, she just kept going. The 500 garbage collections haven't all been consecutive since she hit her first goal -- she's earned a day off from time to time -- but Sondecker kept track of her progress through an Instagram account where she posts a picture of her pick-up from every hike.

Kudos to her.
My God!
If you’re going to do it, just do it and don’t expect recognition. I know a guy who has been cleaning up a wetland for over 10 years, picked up over 60 thousand pounds of trash and returned phones, and other assorted lost items, and refused any recognition.
Everybody needs a good Hobby.
I would think the ecofriendly hippies in Austin wouldnt trash their own city.
She should have a channel on YouTube. Look at me! As an avid hiker pretty much every hike is a trash hike. Truly thereis little trash to be found on most trails. The most common trash item is toilet paper and I dont touch it so it is still there. Most of trash is dropped by children and some cultures litter more than others. The Texas litterers that she is picking up after are probably very recently hikers since that is how you get from one country to another.
How many other says he inspired by his actions?
I bet not as many as this lady will.
what is your point?
I have done this. Not as much as I used to do. Went up to Lookout Mtn last year and picked up a bunch while hiking up the road near the top. It was impromptu. I just used some bags I found along the way. Yay to this lady for cleaning up. Littering is a huge pet peeve of mine. I grew up with this guy:
But he’d kill himself if he saw this:
Thanks for posting a link to the video on river pollution. Yikes!
Why are people such pigs
You are welcome. That is crazy. Poor people that have to rely on that water.
My point is that publicizing what you are doing has some upsides too.
I have a freind who does this every day. He even recently disassembled and removed a washing machine piece by piece for weeks 1500 feet up a steep mountainside.
prisoners don’t pick up garbage anymore?
Some will do cleaning and mowing of public areas but many times they’re too good to do such menial work. Besides, work is a four letter word to their attorneys and lobbyists.
With others, you really don’t want them outside the gates.
