“Why would you take an honor away from one man to honor another?”

The basketball arena at Duquense University is called the Palumbo Center, named after a benefactor who gave $15 million to the business school in the early 1980's.

Next year it will close for extensive renovations. When it reopens it will be renamed the UPMC Chuck Cooper Fieldhouse, named after an ex-Duquesne star who was the first black player drafted by the NBA.

How does the Palumbo family feel about that I wonder? Fifteen million just doesn't go as far as it used to I reckon.

Sadly, schools and colleges are renaming buildings that they originally named after donors when new donors with more money comes along.

If there's a family involved or classmates and friends, they might be able to fight the change, but if you were wealthy and childless a century back and thought giving money to a college would make your name live on for future generations, you may have been mistaken.
