I had enough money for my kid’s 4 year tuition if going to an in-state college. When my kid wanted to go out of state, I said I had enough for 2 years only, with the understanding that that was all there was from Daddy.
The kid started working for the school, which gives employees a 75% discount. There was no looking back!
Now the kid is going to Cal Tech with for a Ph.D. with 0$ debt incurred.
Where there is a will, there is a way!

Dave Ramsey should pull a Mr. Potter (’It’s a Wonderful Life’), by first asking:

“What have you been running up that kind of debt for - have you been playing the market? Have a girl on the side maybe...? Why don’t you go to some of the riff raff you love so much inside that Beltway for the money?”

I will bet that a lot of that CC debt is from late fees and interest on interest on interest. Plus automatic hikes in interest rates charged due to poor repayment history.

Son's in first year of his doctoral degree.

We've had one basic, non-compromise rule since he began college:

If college leads to ANY incurred debt, then it stops.

It can be done, but it takes a lot of work.

Why not, there is no consequence.

I work at a univ. and these students honestly believe ‘work’ is beneath them.

They have NO conception of what ‘work’ IS

Well done, Art! Kudos to you and the kid both. Many moons ago, thanks to scholarships and many hours of work-study jobs, I worked my was thru a rather costly private college in four years without a penny of debt. Where there’s a will, there’s a way. That said, the desirability and necessity of a college education nowadays is grossly overstated. I recently bought my forever home (paying cash) and then hired local workmen to do some necessary work around the place. Electricians, plumbers, builders, stuccoers, roofers — without exception they were outstanding at their various jobs, and they seemed to be quietly proud of their work. Even the shy Mexican immigrant in the straw hat who single-handedly delivered and unloaded a huge load of lumber . . . Toxic masculinity my ass.

We helped our children with their homework, showed them how to organize their studies. Took them outside and used the great outdoors for vacationing. And kept their noses clean by staying involved. They all went military, they all got degrees before their tours were up, they all used their GI bills and they all stayed productive.

It wasn’t easy but we sleep better at nights knowing they matured into adulthood and are responsible family centered adults themselves. Thank You Lord for guiding our feet and making our hands to work in their lives. Amen!

The idiot in the story is the one who backstops the lender. The lender earns fees and then bundles and sells the loans, but someone backstops him.

Thank you for the kind words. The Socialists will, I’m sure, start telling all who will listen that self achievers are to be shunned as toxic.

WNY: Most of these loans are back by the federal government which means you and I are backstopping these loans.

I have two daughters... now ages 23 and 27

I told them I would get them through college WITHOUT ANY DEBT if they:
1) picked a major that would pay off the investment of their time and my money
2) Worked hard and make the grades

Long story short... They did and I did.

One is now a Registered Nurse (Bachelors degree) working on her Masters in Nursing Education.

The other earned her Bachelors in Biomedical Engineering 2 years ago, and is now working on her Doctorate in Engineering (while making enough money to mostly support herself while her school is being paid for).

They both got good undergraduate scholarships, and worked hard and made the grades.

It involved a parental sacrifice as well. I will end up working a couple of years past when I had planned to retire.

Student debt can be a crushing thing.

I’ve got good kids, and I felt like the money would be better for them now than after I am deceased.

King Barack I decreed that the government would take over the student loan program so the bankers wouldn’t make the money. When has the government ever done anything better than the private sector? This program is a testimony to its incompetence. Watch for Ocasio and Beto to run on forgiving all student debt, thus buying votes with taxpayer money, which is a winning strategy for Democrat politicians.

You'll need to get a mirror to see THAT idiot. Who do you think guarantees Guaranteed Student Loans?

I saw this a few days ago, and just shook my head the whole way through.

1 million in debt??? That is just fricking pathetic especially when you aren’t much more than some mid-level cubical jockey.
