I feel sorry for the officer. He’s probably going to spend years second guessing his actions that evening.
I was also someplace dark for the eclipse. The difference is that I did not choose to lie down on a road in the dark, ignoring the significant potential for injury. I have common sense.

Perhaps, if you had been in an area that was locked to auto traffic you would have felt safe to lie in the road. They were after all where they thought they were safe from traffic, in a park that had a locked gate so that no cars could enter. I don’t know how the police got in, perhaps they had a key.
While I think it is likely unwise to lay in the road I do understand that if the road was blocked to traffic I might feel more inclined to ignore the inherent dangers of laying in the road.
I too was in a safe place to watch, my back yard, it was probably the most spectacular lunar eclipse I have ever seen, they are usually pretty boring. While it was great it was very cold. I took a nice camera out (D810 with a 600mm lens) but I was shivering so much I couldn’t get a good picture and I wasn’t about to spend the time to set up a tripod.
BINGO!! I too feel sorry for the policeman!
