Bill to let undocumented residents get driver's licenses to be introduced in City Council

A bill that would call on the state to allow undocumented residents to obtain driver’s licenses is set to come before the City Council this week.

The legislation, which City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez plans to introduce Wednesday, makes the case that undocumented immigrants should be able to get the IDs because it would make for safer roads.

“I believe that the State of New York has a great opportunity, not only to challenge President Trump, but also lead by example, and that's what I've been advocating for for years,” Rodriguez said. “By allowing them to have their driver’s license, it will make our state safer and it will give relief today and it will recognize their contribution to our economy.”

If passed, the nonbinding resolution would make a Council position on the issue official before the state Assembly and Senate, both of which are now controlled by Democrats — who are typically more sympathetic to the idea than Republicans are.

Rodriguez, a Washington Heights Democrat, cited statistics in the resolution that unlicensed drivers are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes and contended that a new state law is “in the best interest of all New Yorkers because immigrants wanting to drive legally will have to pass written and practical driver's exams, register their vehicles and obtain automobile insurance.”

Similar policy proposals have stalled before. In 2007, then-Gov. Eliot Spitzer dropped plans to offer the IDs after unrelenting criticism.

Councilman Joseph Borelli (R-S.I.) said the bill is nothing more than political posturing.

“This is the latest in another attempt to blur the line between legal and illegal and the rule of law versus open borders,” he said. “I'm sure Albany is not going to be shocked that (in) the liberal City Council, many City Council members are in support of this, and I don't think it's going to tip the scale either way.”

The Council resolution is expected to go before the body’s Immigration Committee. If passed, it would be put up for a full Council vote Wednesday.

Yet another attempt by HISPANIC legislators to further blur the line between legal immigrants and the garbage which sneaked in here illegally from south of the border.

The Hispanics-First legislator, of course Hispanic, gives the following laughable reason for wanting to grant illegals drivers licenses. Of course, she is trying to make it sound like a positive thing--when illegals don't need drivers licenses at all, since they don't even belong here. Yet another clear demonstration that the Hispanic legislators have far greater allegiance to fellow Hispanics, regardless of where they are from or their legal status, than they have to U.S. citizens. They are trying to cover for their countrymen.

"...unlicensed drivers are more likely to be involved in fatal crashes and contended that a new state law is “in the best interest of all New Yorkers because immigrants wanting to drive legally will have to pass written and practical driver's exams, register their vehicles and obtain automobile insurance.”

Say, do you smell something?

That statement is pure Bull manure.

I live in Nevada. The legislature here started giving out driver’s licenses to illegals 4 years ago.

MY vehicle insurance has gone up over 65%. The portion of my premium for UNINSURED motorists has gone from 27% of the premium to over 48% of the premium.

My last ticket was over 18 years ago—seat belt—and my last accident was Oct of 1966.

Living on Soc Sec isn’t helped by the illegals having ‘licenses’.

Motor Voter laws REQUIRE the DMV employee to give voter registration paperwork to the license applicant-—REGARDLESS of citizenship.

That only puts more registered illegals into the voting booths.

They did the same thing here in L.A. The illegal wetbacks can do pretty much anything they want. Gawd, my accident lawyer friend could not even go after these bastards when they hit an actual driver who has insurance..

City Council can’t change New York state law.

So on the license does it say “I’m a Illegal Alien “ in big bold letters across the front?

They did that in my fair state.

Now people who have lived here all their lives have to pay extra for Real ID so they can get on a domestic flight.

(spit)

Best way to deal with this is to declare that the US Government will no longer accept New York DLs as a valid form of ID for certain activities, like passing through airport security for domestic flights. That’s gonna tick off a lot of people.

This is the same "logic" used in California when it was a coming along. NY is behind the times.

At a minimum these states already offer driver's licenses to illegals: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, New Mexico, Nevada, Utah, Vermont, and Washington

The California example I’ve seen online says “Federal Limits Apply” in the corner meaning they can’t board an airplane, visit a military base or nuclear power plant because it’s not Real ID Act compliant.

Potentially yes. This was always the plan.

well since criminals can now get licenses, everyone who LOST their license due to drinking can now get them back no problem- all criminals must be issued licenses i guess- or are we now just picking and choosing which criminals we give them to?

The first traffic fatality caused by an illegal . . . those who voted for such a bill should be considered accomplices to murder.

How many people have been hurt or killed by licensed illegal aliens in Nevada over the past few years?

If it’s more than one, the argument against giving them licenses is won.

What's the point, exactly? A city council has no power over this. Pure grandstanding nonsense.

Really makes Hispanics look like they only care about giving other Hispanics stuff, the law be damned.
