Sounds like the drivel I am used to seeing issue forth from National Review and New Republic, not the Federalist.
Are we not smart enough to have a healthy economy that sustains itself without relying on constant growth of population? I think we are, once we move away from policies that directly aid the suburban sprawl developers. “Empty space” in my garage as I explain often to my wife, is NOT WASTED SPACE. Sure, there’s more space in the hills and mountains surrounding LA and San Francisco and other cities, but we don’t have to fill every single inch of it with identical houses, curving boulevards, shopping malls, Olive Garden restuarants and the like.
Let’s try something else.
Immigration is burden to the wager earner and tax payer. It is not victim-less crime.
Do the writers of articles like this one ever push for immigration to the USA of only people who are the opposite of all the things you listed, such as from a First World country, well-educated, no criminal record, no communicable diseases, financially solvent, fluent in English, able to obtain gainful employment immediately of a type which will not cause an American to lose a job, someone who brings a skill or financial investment needed in the USA, etc?
Perhaps if we import half a billion Chinese citizens they will help us defend ourselves against China.
Even better, we can just ally with a few other countries that have in aggregate a half billion people and not all share a common citizenship.

Population growth is great for virtue signaling, homebuilders and empire building politicians who want more tax money to misdirect, but it does nothing to lift the per capita income or quality of life of existing citizens. If someone wants more neighbors in the US they can typically find them unless they already live in the most populous city.
High birth rates are a sign of prosperity and the opposite is also true. The USA needs a GDP growth spurt, to hold immigration in check, let wages rise considerably then young people will squirt kids out like rabbits.
Immigration to the USA should be stopped entirely for at least a decade while we remove all the illegals and all the legal non citizens who are receiving any sort of government welfare. The only exception should be University applicants on merit selection only in STEM fields.High testing graduates can be then offered green cards and a citizenship path. The US gained and retained its technology and science predominance by sucking in the world’s budding geniuses.

And an economy that is dependent upon population growth is not a sound economy. Switzerland maybe has it about right, having taken a hundred years to have doubled to its current 8 million and on track for about the same over the next hundred years.

So the solution to OVERPOPULATION by Communist countries is to import those who support communism? This is madness.
In a US of 200 million people, we cjould muster enough firepower to defend our nation, and/or destroy any of the others if need be. Numbers mean very little in the warfare of today. If they cannot place enough soldiers on our soil to take over the entire country, and we cannot do the same, it is simply a stalemate. THAT is really where we are at this point in history. Of course they could or we could destroy much of the land and make it unhabitable. Sane nations know there is no point to this.
It is time to secede from the US, find a area of land and remove ourselves from this country. I seen no commonality between most of the those elected to represent us, the machinery they control, and the common people of most of the country.
It is either that, or a total overthrow of the government and institution of a new one. I am tired of worrying about, or fighting against something that none of us can change the course of without the use of arms.
