My initial reaction also was that this must be a joke, but after reading the article, I think it is strange, but true.

I just did some research to see if this was someone trying to have us on. It appears that this species actually does have multicolored fur. Now I bet people will be taking lots from the wild to sell as pets. If they tame down well, they could be the next gerbil. Other mammals have bright multicolored fur, such as the mandrill.

I don't know if the nose area is colored fur or skin.

I used to feed squirrels, while in college here in the US. They liked walnuts.

When I was in college, there were date palm trees on campus. The local squirrels (small grey ones) would get drunk from eating the overripe, fermenting dates. Very amusing to watch - running in circles and such (the girls on campus would always gather and say "Aww... the poor thing's sick!", and I'd go inform them that Mr. Squirrel just needed to sleep it off).

The (much larger) fox squirrels in north Texas are not as amusing. Very destructive critters.

Thank you, RB. I should really get off my interbut, and check things out for myself.

colors were manipulated; skip the first page of pics of the fake squirrel and you’ll see what they really look like:
