Judge threatens to stop Carnival ships from docking in U.S.

MIAMI — A federal judge has threatened to temporarily block Carnival Corp. from docking cruise ships at ports in the United States as punishment for a possible probation violation.

The Miami Herald reports U.S. District Judge Patricia Seitz said Wednesday that she’ll make a decision in June, and she wants company chairman Micky Arison and president Donald Arnold to attend that hearing.

“The people at the top are treating this as a gnat,” Seitz said. “If I could, I would give all the members of the executive committee a visit to the detention center for a couple of days. It’s amazing how that helps people come to focus on reality.”

Miami-based Carnival has been on probation for two years as part of a $40 million settlement for illegally dumping oil into the ocean from its Princess Cruises ships and lying about the scheme, according to court filings.

Pleased to see this. Freeper Kenny Bunk (RIP) and I once crossed astern of a Carnival ship hardly 4nm out of Canaveral; we were treated to a massive multi-sensory effluent attack.

Makes a citizen wonder why there is such anarchy in the ‘law’ and the motives of a judge who would do this, obviously. on the take to the dock unions. i wonder how big her payoff was.

Cruise ships are floating massive sewage tanks. They routinely dump once offshore a few miles. Still see brown sludge offshore Big island Hawaii.

Some defenders claim it is all processed onboard, but I suspect captains bypass that chore when they think they can get away with it.

Yet another out of control tinpot dictator Obama appointee with a God complex.

(Because prosecution of illegal clandestine oil and waste dumping in U.S. and near shore waters is all about whether Judges are appointed by Democrats or Republicans?)

(Because enforcers prosecutors and judges of U.S. Law have a "God complex?")

(Because even the most lax environmental laws concerning the water our children bathe in at the beach comprise an unnecessary burden on a cheap-ass lawless PANAMA FLAG / MALTA FLAG company - with the veneer of a few US offices - like Carnival?)

(Because clandestine, illegal dumping - a Carnival specialty - should be overlooked because they are a business and we "conservatives who love business" should side with Panamanian / Maltese business enterprises over our national interests?)

So many good choices. Just keep your kids off Cocoa Beach.

the judge is being cruel to poor defenseless sea bugs by depriving them of a food source:

“Yet another out of control tinpot dictator Obama appointee with a God complex.”

I am interested in just why you would say that? Ships dumping their refuse and their bilges into the ocean isn’t a trivial problem. In the Great Lakes, there are marine species that have “arrived” by that mechanism that are messing up the native marine life there and it’s serious. Just because she’s an Obama appointee, doesn’t mean she’s always going to be on the “wrong side of all issues!” There are sitting “Boosh Judges” that are as big POS as the RAT appointed judges.

Clinton Judge

First thing I want to know when I see some Federal judge putting out some excessively tyrannical or completely insane order. Were they appointed by the Obama sh*thead, the Clinton sh*thead, or the Carter sh*thead.

Usually it's one of the three.

Thanks George HW Bush for breaking your word and thereby electing that human garbage piece of sh*t Bill Clinton. Thanks a lot George! We are still living with the consequences of your idiotic decision to break your word.

I don't see the problem with them dumping sewage, provided it is just biological sewage and provided they dump it far enough out in the ocean. The plant and animal life out there will make quick work of it.

But what is this business of dumping oil in the ocean? Why would a ship dump oil?

Just because she’s an Obama appointee, doesn’t mean she’s always going to be on the “wrong side of all issues!

Much of the time there is a good correlation between idiot/tyrannical decisions and Democrat apointees.

Oil will collect in the bilges, specifically under the engines, of most ships. Also, there is a lot of oil changing going on at sea with generators, lubricating, etc. It is wholly criminal to discharge oil at sea, with very few exceptions. In essence:

MARPOL Annex 1 (Annex 1 generally has to do with oil,)

15.

D General requirements

8 No discharge into the sea shall contain chemicals or other substances in quantities or concentrations which are hazardous to the marine environment or chemicals or other substances introduced for the purpose of circumventing the conditions of discharge specified in this regulation.

9 The oil residues which cannot be discharged into the sea in compliance with this regulation shall be retained on board for subsequent discharge to reception facilities.

There is usually some oil in the bilge water, I suspect that’s what was pumped into the ocean. Enough to cause an oily sheen behind the ship.

An important thing to remember is that these are Masters who fully know the law - U.S. and International - and who dump near U.S. waters in clandestine defiance of the law.

Captains / Masters are tested on the ins and outs of the law - from 100T on up... We all get it drilled into us.

I just can’t see what any of this has to do with Obama.

Carnival is a bad actor and everyone knows it.

My family has a lot to be thankful for to Carnival because we had a family member on a Carnival cruise develop a life-threatening emergency. The captain was called and told of the crisis and the captain announced to the passengers of the crisis and said they were diverting the ship toward an island with a hospital. The captain even asked the passengers to pray for the patient. We are very defensive of Carnival.

I do not know many true, experienced, licensed Captains who have not saved lives. (I do not in fact know any.)

It is good that you harbor affection and loyalty for the company that hired the man or woman who saved your kin.

The way to serve Carnival, if that is your aim, is to help bring them into line with U.S. interests.

They are at present too often like a drunken, rogue operation, destined for disaster. If all turn a blind eye “for now” the result will be the end of the company.

That seems reasonable to me. Why wouldn’t they discharge the oil into a oil collection system at port?
