Norman Lear intended Meathead and Gloria to be the ‘stars’ of the show, to push liberal ideas onto America.
It drove him crazy that no matter how they wrote the scripts, they could not make America like them...............

It’s funny how Archie became a cultural icon of sorts, when liberal Norman Lear intended for the character to be the butt of the joke .
One bit of trivia I recall about the show was that Mickey Rooney was originally offered the role of Archie, but he thought that the show was unpatriotic in it’s viewpoint and thus turned the offer down. Harrison Ford was offered the role of Mike, but did not like the argumentative nature of the show and refused as well.
