Why is it the focus has always been on the date of the Declaration of Independence. Not when we were actually officially recognized as an independent nation ? A newly created country.
Because this is when WE recognized ourselves as independent instead of when others decided to recognize us...which would have been the French first I suppose.
Independence requires no one else to recognize us - we made the call as our God Given Right so that is the date that is important.
