No, not like the KGB. To be the KGB, they’d have to be somewhat competent. They’re not much of a law enforcement agency either, as they’re experts and swooping in at the eleventh hour and stealing a nearly-complete investigations away from local departments for wins.
In reality, they’re more of a “cleanup” agency, experts a sweeping things under the rug for the Deep State. They’re sort of the Harvey Keitel character in Pulp Fiction, but without the gravitas.
J. Edgar was an empire builder who worked very hard to keep domestic counterintelligence in the FBI and out of military intelligence and the CIA. That needs to be re-thought. Counterintelligence against people allegedly working with foreign agents is the hook Brennan, Comey and Rosenstein used to mount the coup attempt.
