When it’s 115 degrees in Arizona, walking a postal route is different from walking one in Portland.

In Arizona, at least you don't have to decontaminate your shoes at the end of your rounds each day.

The majority of the older folks in our church do not use a computer.

Then the church should offer computer classes for them.

Times have changed. I can tell you that any carrier staying in one spot more than 10 minutes will show up on a report. Had one carrier be stuck at the railroad crossing for 18 minutes by a stopped train. There was no way for her to turn around and no close route to deviate to if she could turn around. She called me to let me know what was going on. I called my postmaster to give him a heads up. Next day I get a nasty gram wanting to know what I was going to do about it. My suggestion was for them to call the railroad and discuss it with them.

They don’t have a computer and most are low income.

Ah...good old postmasters. The ones who get the bonuses for reducing what they consider "waste" in the post office budget. I used to use another small post office when I had doctor appointments and errands that were about 30 minutes from my home. Normally, I'd get in and out without any problems. I made the mistake one day of going there when the regular girl was out, and the postmaster was covering for her. She was so inept that the line was out the door. I gave up after 20 minutes, and waited until I got back home.

I remember one day, several years ago, running into my local carrier while I was on my way out of the building. He was being tracked by another employee who was carrying some small device which was, I am assuming, tracking the carrier that day.

That postmaster is/was a blond. He didn’t have a clue how to do my job. Best thing I can say is that he didn’t hold a grudge, unlike most of the rest of the managers.

The biggest problem with the postal service is Congress and the DC culture of micromanagement. Should probably add the unions in there also. Everything is PC to the max and they only go after those who are actually doing their jobs.

They’re supposed to be delivering the mail not sitting in the truck

I worked for New York State under Hugh Carey, Mario Cuomo, and George Pataki, and it was no different. At lease George Pataki, and the State Legislature reinstated the death penalty for a while, until the court overturned it. And Pataki stopped the college program for inmates in NY State prisons. I feel sorry for the poor slobs who had to work under Spitzer, Paterson, and Andrew Cuomo. I had retired by then.

You mean they're not supposed to be reading your catalogs and magazines?

A/C out here only works if the doors are closed, They hardly ever close their doors so it is pointless without a full body spacesuit. It’s not a cushy indoor job, it’s an outdoor job. Those like myself who have to work outside in Az carry lots of water and stay soaking wet, cloths and all. In a stiff breeze you can actually feel cold at times.
