"Queens district attorney candidate Tiffany Cabán conceded defeat Tuesday night — six weeks after the Democratic primary election that pitted her against the establishment-backed Queens Borough President Melinda Katz."

“We terrified the Democratic establishment,” Cabán told her supporters at a party in Astoria.

“We showed [that] you can run on a boldly decarceral platform,” she added referring to her criminal justice reforms. “You don’t have to play by the old rules.”

[True, I have to begrudgingly give her that. Another “nobody” almost took down the establishment candidate.]

At this stage, within the Democratic party in NYC, my guess is it’s blacks and Hispanics vs Asians and whites, with blacks and Hispanics gaining ground for demographic reasons (i.e. immigration and birthrate disparities). In time, I expect more Asians and whites to move towards the GOP for purely economic reason as Democratic pols trend black and Hispanic, and push for big tax and fee increases to pay for expanded welfare programs and subsidies. Ethnic politics will take center stage. What was once old will become new again.

Yeah...while I like the Dem’s infighting, the recount business allowing a favored pol to just squeak in is still a problem. What will be more interesting if Katz comes up against a determined Pubbie or an independent NY workers party candidate if she will then have to do some serious booty kissing of Caban and her supporters to keep her support. The Latinos have been signaling that they are not all monolithic in their thinking and some of them are very far left but they will vote pragmatically for their own interests. A strong socialist candidate with Caban’s backing could still take it away from Katz in the general.

So she is challenging the results in court or was that already done?

She initially won the election in June, but there was a recount. The recount did not go in her favor, and she finally conceded. She will have to try harder next time.

The real AOC or one of the cardboard cutouts

The fact that the Queens Borough President had to go through a recount to defeat a political nobody is very significant. AOC’s proving to be a political wunderkind of sorts, at least in NYC.

AOC's candidate Caban got 34K votes in a borough of 2.4 million people.

The only significance is that AOC can organize enough people to have her candidate lose closely in an extremely low turnout primary..

That’s a pretty impressive achievement. The Queens Borough President had a lot resources at her disposal to drive turnout. Since she was as good as elected if she won the primary, this was the real election. That she was almost beaten by a nobody is evidence that AOC is someone to be reckoned with inside Democratic circles.

AOC was perturbed recently over a picture of her being groped by some young men. Upon seeing the picture, maybe she asked: “Is that me or a cardboard cutout?”

It was an unimpressive performance for both the Democrat machine candidate and the AOC supported candidate.

Both candidates got a paltry 34K votes in a borough of 2.4 million people.

Both candidates underachieved.

It proves that the AOC's machine is just as unpopular as the Democrat machine.

Looks like a pyrrhic victory. Katz will be pressured by AOCers to go ultra red. But Katz is a jewish name, so I do nor think she will pronounce antisemtic stuff

I just got home to my 20 Volume Oxford English Dictionary (2nd Edition). decarceral is not an entry either in the general listing or in the words formed with the prefix de.

Perhaps it is something that has recently come into being.

“We need clarity on how your ‘decarceral’ and ‘restorative justice’ policies apply to cases involving violence and hate.”

This is the most stunning win yet in the movement to elect decarceral prosecutors: Tiffany Caban (@CabanForQueens), a 31 year-old queer, Latina public defender will become the District Attorney of Queens, the 11th most populous county in America. That’s people power.
