Obama’s not worried. He knows that any substantial sea level rise is going to take a thousand years or more.

Calculate the surface area of the planets oceans and then calculate if it all went up one edge how much water that would have to be

Hah! You canna no fool me, Boss! I know the ocean, she have no edge!

But here's a math problem for you: Calculate the amount of water currently (still) locked up in Greenland's glaciers and Antarctica's shelf ice, and then calculate by how much the oceans would rise if only 1% of that ice melted.

(Nota Bene: Not a proponent of Anthropogenic Global Warming, but the fact is that, while the oceans are vast, so is the amount of water locked up in ice that would flow into the oceans if it melted.)

Regards,

If the ice is on land. If the ice is in water, that’s a different equation.

The retort to any AGW defender is to ask them when they are moving north and to higher ground. And abandoning their worthless property.

You forget the Obama is the ONE we have been waiting for. The planet will cool and the oceans recede.

I guess since he is no longer president the oceans will recede only in front of his property. The rest of us can go pound sand and drown.

If the ice is on land. If the ice is in water, that’s a different equation.

That's why I explicitly referenced Antarctica's shelf ice (the melting glaciers would calve and fall into the ocean) and Greenland's ice - rather than, say, Arctic ice.

But when Obama was nominated in 2008, he said, and I quote, “This was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal.”

Guess those of us who like our oceans, decided to keep our oceans.

Hmm, by my calculations, it would take about 6.136 quadrillion gallons of water to raise the average world sea level by 1 inch.

For comparison, if all the glaciers on Greenland melted, it would only supply 1.3 quadrillion gallons, or less than a quarter inch. I’m having trouble finding exact figures for the portion of the antarctic ice sheet that is over land, but some seem to say it is about 9 times the volume of Greenland’s ice sheet, so it might be able to raise the ocean levels a couple inches if the whole thing melted.

I’m not sure how much that is in gallons, or exactly how to figure it, as math has never been my strong suit! But I am guessing A LOT!
