Yes, he was cashiered and given a bad conduct discharge. Since 1900 I believe only one other cadet has had his commision revoked. Guy in the Class of ‘56, I think.

“West Point issues function M4’s to kadets?”

I would question them if they do didn’t.

“Interesting the glaring omission - they don’t mention even the possibility the cadet may pose a danger to others. Just himself. Someone “missing”, armed with a rifle. Hm.”

This is massing above but was in the original article: “Authorities don’t believe the cadet has any magazines or ammunition or poses a threat to the public. He may be a danger to himself, the military academy said in a statement.”

Spencer Rapone was relieved of duty and discharged from The Army.

I am just questioning M4. I thought M4's were latest and greatest and not even regular issue for all combat soldiers yet. Seems like Kadets would not need the latest and greatest just for drill practice.

At Annapolis, we had M1's for drill, but that was so long ago I don't recall them being functional. Anytime we had functional rifles for range shooting they were issued and returned to the armory, to the best of my memory. I think I would remember if they were since, as a kid growing up in my fathers home, I could field strip and reassemble an M1 in about 2 minutes at age 12 or so.

In high school ROTC we also had M1's but they were definitely not functional, having been welded bolt closed (shame to destroy a good rifle like that)

Perhaps they meant a M14. That is what cadets are issued for drills and parades. Back in the day they were kept in the rooms in the cadet barracks. Don’t know if that is still the case or not.

He does have a name, but regulations/privacy require it not be released until after he is found.

I suspect this is the next push by the Left: get members of the military to commit atrocities with military weapons against Americans, in order to solve one of the Left’s problems: the American people hold the military in high esteem.

That was a good movie! I can’t recall the last time Telefon was shown by anyone.

Yes, I “assumed” they might try to make that distinction.

If he doesn’t have any ammunition, he can’t be a threat to himself with the rifle, but at the same time it is a bit queer to assert that a suicidal man with a rifle is no danger to the public.

Have they deigned to release his name and a photograph, so the not-in-any-danger public can maybe keep an eye out for the totally not in posession of any ammo or magazines guy with a rifle who may or may not be suicidal?

What “regulations” require “privacy” for an AWOL soldier armed with a rifle?

LOL

I must admit that during BCT I considered deserting once or twice (I didn't...6 years service...honorable discharge). But while doing so I never considered taking an M-14 with me.

We had a Private Pyle in out BCT company in ‘69.The DIs rode him just like GySgt Hartman rode Pyle. He took it all...until he went AWOL 2 days before graduation. I really hope they gave him a discharge...there’s no way he should have been in the military. There’s no way that his IQ was any higher than 60.
