A massively hyped Game of Thrones prequel series is not moving forward.
HBO has scrapped plans for a prequel from showrunner Jane Goldman that starred Naomi Watts and took place thousands of years before the original series. The network shot a full pilot episode in Northern Ireland earlier this year and has elected not to pick up the series. EW first heard of the plan to scrap the pilot weeks ago but HBO did not confirm the news.
A second GoT prequel project focusing on the Targaryen Civil War, however, is still in the works. The project hasnt officially received a pilot order, but with this news, an order seems more likely. (UPDATE: HBO announced Tuesday evening that it has given a full series order to House of the Dragon, hired a top GoT director and released a poster.)
The death of the Game of Thrones prequel is a dramatic twist in HBOs succession plan for its most popular and most-Emmy-awarded series ever. The ambitious project took place during Westeros Age of Heroes on the precipice of The Long Night war with the White Walkers (in fact, author and executive producer George R.R. Martin suggested The Long Night as a title). The pilot also touted a female showrunner (Goldman, whose credits include Kick-Ass and Kingsman: The Secret Service), director (Jessica Jones veteran S.J. Clarkson), and several female leads (including The Rise of Skywalker newcomer Naomi Ackie and Collette actress Denise Gough). The series was to be distinct from GoT in look and feel, and notably did not include dragons given House Targaryen had yet to rise, but it would have included early Starks and Lannisters.

If it was made five years from now some LBQT freak would be running every kingdom and having sex with children.
Was that found in caves?
She’s aging pretty well when you factor her actual age into the assessment.
I guess she’s a good actress but if I see her listed in the cast of a movie, I pass; they’re invariably dull and convoluted plots that resolve to insignificance. The commitment and professionalism she invests in her roles is impressive, but never enough to make the production anything more than the dud it started out as.
It’s curious: how does a competent and iconic actress like her become such a reliable indicator of bad cinema?
Probably the most overhyped tv show of the last 10-20 years.
Because it was garbage from second one.
After the crappy last season, I’ve lost all interest in GOT.
King Kong thought so
Begging the question, why?
“They were so stupid to rush the last season. Now theyve killed their golden goose.”
the ending of GoT was so awful, we instantly lost all interest in all things GoT forever. We had been excitedly looking forward to watching the whole series again, until the final episode made the entire series completely pointless ...
“And it is really poignant to what we are dealing with today”
what she REALLY means is what SHE and her hollywood leftist buddies are dealing with, because i’m pretty sure she doesn’t mean what I’M dealing with, namely watching President Trump achieve success after success despite practically all political and media forces opposing him, and watching the media and their Democrat Party subsidiary completely self-destruct, and anticipating one of the greatest political victories in 2020 that our country has ever seen ...
“Probably the most overhyped tv show of the last 10-20 years”
Completely agree...
Because the show was already starting to get stale.
If you want (for example) to come up with a zombie show now, you'd better make sure that it has a different look than the ones already on TV now, because people are already getting tired of the ones currently available.
Yep, I could have written your post. I have digital copies of all but the last season. I won’t be getting the last season and I doubt I will re-watch the other ones. In fact, I think I’m burnt out on continuing series shows like GOT.
