Never heard of a “doss house” meaning flop house or boarding house.
AFAIK the pod cubicle rent doesn’t include meals, so considering occupants have no space to store groceries, they must buy restaurant food every meal— adding significantly to costs.
Animals... not even a privacy curtain.

That’s my apartment! A small, comfortable cubicle. :)
The common kitchen and dining room is separate so everyone eats together.
Wouldn’t be surprised if meals are included in the rent. I don’t have to buy food and snacks.

When my ancestors came to these shores in the 1630s, the home they built for themselves, the average then was 10’x 10’, was likely larger than this pod.
