Mae West was an American actress whose generous bust proportions inspired one of the worst nightmares for military paratroopers, the Mae West malfunction, in which the parachute would deploy with a blown periphery, resulting in a deployment that resembles a large brassiere.

I had never heard of a Mae West Malfunction before today.

I have heard the inflatable life vest that Naval Aviators wore referred to as "Mae Wests."

One of the primary paratrooper training procedures, at least back in 1976, were how to extract oneself from a “Mae West Malfunction,” which occurred when a parachute deployed with its periphery compromised. This deployment resulted in two much smaller canopies, reducing the drag coefficient of the parachute, increasing the rate of descent of a paratrooper to a dangerous and usually fatal speed. The procedure was to manually release the parachute and immediately deploy the reserve, and was perhaps the trickiest aspect of training, as jumping from 1200 feet would give the paratrooper very little time to safely perform this maneuver, hence the significant amount of time we took to essentially internalize this process.

During WW2, Mae West was probably the most widely known celebrity with noticeably large, ah, “upper assets,” hence the slang being attributed then. Twenty years later I have no doubt such deployment malfunctions would have been called “Dolly Partons.”
