If she punched hard enough, she could have killed it.

A pitching wedge or bat could strike a fatal blow if placed behind the ear on the mastoid. It would at least stun the animal.

Works on all mammals, even bipeds.

Weird...no paywall for me. Maybe you get 5 free articles per month and you hit your limit? This is the first time I’ve gone to the SC Sentinel in ages, so I got my few free articles.

I hope she’s not in trouble for assaulting the mountain lion. I believe they are protected in California.

They are protected from hunting. This was not hunting.

Mountain lions/cougars have no protections here in Iowa. You can kill one at any time of the year. No season or permit required.

Just saw a picture of one on a deer hunting site last night. A bow hunter put an arrow through it while it was facing off with a deer.

About one every ten square miles here in the Santa Cruz Mountains. My wife has seen one. Me — never spotted one. I suspect they have kept a close eye on me, though.

P.S. We are headed to the Panhandle tomorrow morning. Probably nowhere near as remote as you.

I doubt it, there are very few people who live in mountain lion country who would favor that.

Afterwards the hunter gave the deer a $100 bill, told him not to spend it all in one place, picked up the cougar carcass and drove away. That part wasn’t filmed.

Yes, I understand. But how many women have been killed since they’ve become protected? I’ve heard that adult men are just big enough to deter most mountain lion attacks, but women seem to fall into the mountain lion’s “I can take that” size.
Also, every state allows humans to defend themselves or other people from wild animals—even protected ones, but I don’t know that one is legally allowed to use deadly force to protect one’s pet.

Quickest way to get any predator to release their jaws? A middle finger right up the ol' bunghole. Not gonna guarantee what'll happen next, but they'll release their grip, all right. 🤣
