During the first referendum oil was about $110 a barrel. Today it's closer to $55. Can an independent Scotland base its economy on whiskey and haggis exports?

Also...the funny thing is that if they declare their independence they're *STILL* out of the European Union.

“most of Scotland on the dole and heavily dependent on England for their economic welfare...”

Scotland produces 80% of the the oil in the U.K.

Scotland will be fine.

The Acts of Union occurred in 1706 and 1707 that created the UK - Scotland and England.

They will have to change the flag if Scotland goes.

Foolish. After two years, the UK will be BOOMING, and the E.U. slumping, and the Scots will never want to leave. Just wait, my fellow Scots.

The parts that want to go can go. The parts that want to stay can stay.

Scotland may not like that outcome.

The idiots over on DU foresee an economic powerhouse on the border of England. Maybe they’re drinking too much Scotch.

Listened to a podcast with Toby Young yesterday. He said once Boris gets the UK out of the EU in six weeks, Scotland would have to successfully apply to get in on its own. He was confident that Spain would veto such an application and said that such a reality would make Scotland a lot less inclined toward going independent.

(And of course they’d only get the referendum again now if Boris decided to give it to them, via Parliament—which he is not about to do.)

So Scotland wants to be dependent on the EU? Let them leave but don’t give them anything, including trade...

Not so fast.
First BoJo has to approve a referendum.
Second, if Scotland secedes after the UK leaves the EU on Jan 31,2020 they will have to apply for separate EU membership. Spain will probably Veto the application because of their concerns over Catalonia trying the same thing.

Scotland is a beggar when it comes to their budget and without the UK or EU to fund them they would be in deep shit.

Scotland was never a good fit with the English Crown to begin with. It was a marriage of necessity, to calm Britain’s northern reaches.

It sort of worked for the past few centuries, but has been unraveling almost from the first.

Scotland will do fine. Oil production is about 3/4 that of Norway. Population is about the same. Of course, none of this will be climatically-correct, given that oil and gas *are* fossil fuels.

There’s only Ulster and Wales left after Scotland. Actually, Ulster should split...they have pretty good gun laws compared to England.

It’s not Scotland’s oil until the Crown cedes the oceanic property and rights to Scotland. Until then, it’s British oil. That same British oil that not only keeps the wheels turning in London, but supplies the revenue that benefits the entire Commonwealth. IF Scotland wants autonomy, build the wall quickly and have at it. But the sea and its resources belong to England and always will as a matter of essential national security.

Neither the Irish nor the Scots are raiding into England any more. If that’s what they want, an amicable separation might not be the worst thing in the world.

I’m curious to see what the EU will do in the event there’s a dispute that can’t be worked out by talking.

Donald Trump could save the English-Scottish union from dissolution and the UK from suicidal destruction, and he loves Bothe Scotland and England—if the Brits were wise enough to let him.

This is all because of Trump’s impeachment fight.
