Interested to see if they backdate the story or go with the standard suspended disbelief since its Hollywood. Anyway, should be good fun.
I still don’t understand why he is still flying in the Navy instead of flying for a commercial airline. I guess we are supposed to buy into the “most unique and talented fighter pilot ever” idea and believe exceptions were made for Maverick.

The original Top Gun came out in 1986. He was a LT then (O2) in the Navy. As a Captain, he’s an O6. Sure, he’s at the end of the rope, but 30 years as an officer, maybe busted down once, and rose back up to O6 (Captain, in the Navy), it’s feasible to me. (I was enlisted, CTT E-4/PNA E-5, 1988-1992).
