FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Free-agent pitcher Rich Hill and his wife were arrested and fined over an altercation with police at Saturday's Buffalo Bills-New England Patriots game, Foxborough Police told The Boston Globe.
Caitlin Hill repeatedly tried to enter Gillette Stadium with an oversized bag, Foxborough Police chief administrator Robert Bolger told the newspaper. She was arrested on disorderly conduct and trespassing charges after she refused to leave the area when ordered by police.
Rich Hill was then arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest after he tried to stop police from putting Caitlin Hill into a police vehicle.
"He saw her as they were trying to get her into a van to bring to the police station, and he started to interfere with the officers," Bolger told the Globe. "He was told several times to back up and he would not. And he ended up getting arrested."
On Monday, the charges were changed to civil infractions by the Norfolk district attorney's office. Both were ordered to pay $500 fines, according to a spokesman for the district attorney.
Hill's attorney, Francis T. O'Brien, Jr., released a statement Monday on behalf of Hill.
"Despite Saturday's events, my great respect for law enforcement remains unchanged," Hill said. "However, seeing my wife handcuffed for a problem that started because of her fanny pack was extremely difficult for me to witness. This was all overblown and we are glad to have it behind us."
Rich Hill, 39, is currently a free agent after spending the past three-plus seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and reaching the World Series in 2017 and 2018. He worked his way back three times from an arm injury and two knee injuries to finish the 2019 season.
Last week, Hill received the Tony Conigliaro Award, which goes to a major leaguer "who has overcome adversity through the attributes of spirit, determination and courage" of the award's namesake.
One thing I will say about Rich, he knows how to pitch.
Mass Staties at a Patriots game.....if you don’t comply with the general rules of cattle, and assimilate as the self-appointed rulers of the event have decreed, the “Staties” will cuff you in a boston second. Arrest first, and ask questions second.
I go to pats games and sometimes its chaotic as they put you through a metal detector and scan your tickets. I can sympathize if she was told to not bring In the bag as its normally chilly might have had some warmer clothes in it. They also could have been drinking , but I dunno if you can say they did anything wrong sometimes frustration from lines and rude people make things happen that normally wouldnt .
Yeah its all state troopers at Gillette. If it was at the gate it was probably staff from the Patriots. Sometimes they are dicks and get people in trouble. The state troopers are cool with us all drinking beers walking outside the stadium but if you disobey them for a second they make examples real quick because theres so many intoxicated people. Im thinking his wife was a few Mick ultras deep and didnt obey the twerps at the gate.
She kept going to different gates to try to get in with the bag after being refused each time.
Some jerk in a bus from New York poured a beer on a Statie on Route 1 outside of Schaeffer Stadium before a Jets-Patriots game. The Staties escorted the bus back to the Rhode Island line. (Which is only about 10 miles.)
I sorta side with the Statie on this one. Crowd control is an unrewarding task, and Kraft tries to keep the Razor as family friendly as Disney World. The last thing they need is a bunch of “DO YOU KNOW WHO I AM”’s running around.
Oversize bag. What was in it?
She was probably trying to smuggle beer into the stadium, and at $9 per beer, who could blame her?
She would only have been stealing from officially sanctioned thieves.
Judging from the photo in the article, I would have stood back and simply let the police take her away.
I found New Orleans police (pre-K, anyway) to be absolutely zero tolerance on disorder outside of the Mardi Gras area.
Call me crazy, but I’m fairly certain the wife of MLB pitcher Rich Hill can afford concessions at a sporting event
Only if the revenue exceeds the spending, regardless of the number size.
Judging from the photo, my guess would be corn on the cob...
The Boston press reported that he is a former Red Sox pitcher. He was born and raised in Milton Mass. He spent 4 years with the Red Sox in between World Series wins. At 39 I suspect he is donsky as a pitcher.
True, but there are many examples of rich people being busted for shoplifting, so it isn't always about the money. For some, it's a sickness, and some just don't like being ripped off, no matter what the price. And for some, well, they're just basically cheap.
Yeah, fair retort. Winona Ryder case in point.
