Just for the record...if you take a quick peek at my profile you'll see an explanation of my screen name.

As for Atacama I think it's pretty close to the equator.I don't know if the equator might be the place to be if you want to see the Northern Hemisphere as well as the Southern.

Again,I'm not a scientist.

Lots of open space out there! Did you take that photo?

The really cool thing is that I this phase, you can see the dark outline of the rest of the moon.

Looks like a big black bubble.

Neat.

:)

It’s swamp gas.

The MIB will be at your door presently to make sure you understand this.

I live in Tucson AZ and we have clear skies at night. There’s a mountain outside town Kitts Peak where they have a lot of telescopes and you can make a reservation to stay up there overnight and view the skies with the scientists. It’s where they decided Pluto wasn’t a planet.

saw the moon,in a "crescent" phase

Why the quotation marks? You quoting someone?

Because with my appalling lack of scientific knowledge I wasn't sure if that was the correct word to use.

“Why the quotation marks?”

Perhaps because the moon isn’t actually a crescent - it’s shape is stable and remains round-ish?

The most amazing night sky I ever saw was when I visited Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii. I learned the meaning of “humbling”.

No.

Back before smart phones, camped out in Lake Powell for 5 days in a houseboat sleeping every night of the roof.

Grew up as a kid in Chicago and was amazed. Shooting stars everywhere. It was breath taking.

Gift from God.

I installed an app on my phone named constellation map. Once you tell it where you are you ain the phone at the sky and it identifies all the stars and constellations. Pretty cool app.

Typically, after the Moon, Venus and Jupiter, then Mars and Saturn are the brightest natural objects in the night sky (often not all at the same time, of course).

So, you’ve surely seen planets before, unless you stay underground at night. You just didn’t realize it...

Conjunctions of bright planets with the moon ARE cool, esp. if 2 planets are involved. :-)

My most amazing night sky was on the last night of a backpack trip at Philmont Scout Ranch NM when we were camping at about 8000’ near the Tooth of Time. The night sky and star show was a nice bonus for the middle of the night pee break.

On a drive up to Greenbank, West Virginia one night in early summer, a decade or two ago, I drove into a valley with zero light pollution on a crystal clear night, no Moon up. The experience was so compelling that I pulled off the road and got out to just take it in with the vehicle lights off.

The starlight was so bright I could see cows in the distance and when I dropped a penny to the ground I could see it clear enough to pick it up from the grass! The Milky Way stretched from horizon to horizon.

Gift from God.

Yup! With all the photos I've seen from the Hubbell Telescope...and other sources...I'm amazed by astronomers who insist that there is no God.

You don't need to go all the way to the desert. Take a look here to find someplace close for a quick weekend away.
