Ive read many tactical debriefs of the recent shooting incident at the West Freeway Church of Christ.
I have no plans to re-hash what has already been discussed in countless articles and videos. There were lots of good things (a near-perfect head shot from an extended distance, no mistaken identity shootings, etc) that happened. There are also a few things that were less than optimal (a fouled draw, failure to keep the guy out of the service, failure to go hands on immediately, poor muzzle awareness). All those issues have already been covered in numerous articles.
What I want to focus on is something that I havent yet seen discussed. Thats the issue of what do we do after the bad guy is down and no longer a threat? We call these actions post shooting procedures. They tend to be some of the most important, but least practiced skills in a defensive shooting incident.
If you are unfamiliar with this particular shooting, read this article that describes what happened. Then watch the event on the video embedded below. Pay special attention to what happened AFTER the gunman was neutralized. Thats a topic that few people deeply consider.

Fortunately you had a dead bad guy with a shot to the head.
Seems like one of the victims tried to pull his gun but was shot before he could get it out and aim it.
Agreed,
Still a very interesting piece on a topic most of us pay little attention to.
Actually, the logical solution would be to shoot the bad guy a couple of more times to make sure he’s dead. For some reason the law doesn’t let you do that.
Yeah, Geneva Convention or some horsesh!t.
Good and interesting article. Thanks.
So sad our churches must consider such things.
Passing it along to pastors I know.
Wet cleanup on aisle one.

Wish I could see the action- I’ve got a black blurb with the label “The moment.......................” on the top of my screen, where ALL the action takes place. Brilliant.
Synopsized from the article:
What to do after the bad guy is down.
Have a second armed person cover the bad guy; don’t get too close though.
Have third person on safety team evacuate people to a safe area, and protect the innocent; be sure no more bad guys are lurking.
Provide medical care to the injured; include medics in the safety team.
Designate at least two people to call 911; be sure they know what to say and what not to say, are calm, and tell the authorities there is an plainclothes armed safety team present.
Organize a welcoming committee that will interact with the authorities; have an unarmed person between the entry and the person that was covering the downed perp.
Three people call/interact: the 911 caller, the person meeting the cops outside, the unarmed person inside near the safety person.
Good stuff. Thanks for posting.
