American Sofia Kenin wins Australian Open, marking first major title

This, essentially, was where Sofia Kenin was going to win or lose the Australian Open final: Down love-40 while serving at 2-all in the third set against two-time major champion Garbiñe Muguruza.

Kenin came through in spectacular fashion. She won the next five points, each with a winner -- one an ace, the others clean groundstrokes to cap exchanges of 11 shots or more.

The American wouldn't lose another game on her way to earning a Grand Slam title at age 21.

She had an impressive tournament and knocked off several good players.

I didn’t record it but I believe they’re running it again tonight.

I like Kenin, but I wanted Mugu to take it.

I happened to catch the end of her victory speech. Seems like a good person to represent the United States. The announcers were so unenthusiastic about it. She’s white so I’m sure they were disappointed.

I’d love that birdie and grand slam her myself...

I’m not usually drawn to tennis any more. But as I was watching Kenin this morning, I was struck by how intense this girl is. She took each point so seriously, whether she won it or lost it, I thought she was going to come apart. Obviously, I was judging by appearances. Inside, she must’ve been well in control. Otherwise, she couldn’t have won out.

Sofia Anna “Sonya” Kenin (age 21) is an American professional tennis player. She has a career-high Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) ranking of No. 12 in the world.

She is the reigning champion at the Australian Open and youngest American to win a Grand Slam women’s singles title since Serena Williams in 2002.

Nah, that wasn’t it. She took out the Aussie favorite in the Semi’s. #1 seed.
