Coronavirus Deaths Climb to 490 in China as New Cases Surface Elsewhere in Asia
ktla ^ | 02/04/2020

Deaths from a new virus rose to 490 in mainland China on Wednesday while new cases on a Japanese cruise ship, in Hong Kong and in Thailand showed the increasing spread of the outbreak and renewed attention toward containing it.

Ten people from the cruise ship tested positive and were taken to hospitals, while all 3,700 crew and passengers on the ship will be quarantined on board for up to 14 days, Health Minister Nobukatsu Kato said. More tests are pending.

In Hong Kong, hospitals workers are striking to demand the border with mainland China be shut completely to ward off the virus, but four new cases without known travel to the mainland indicate the illness is spreading locally in the territory.

The growing caseload “indicates significant risk of community transmission” and could portend a “large-scale” outbreak, said Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the communicable disease branch at the Center for Health Protection.

The 10 cases confirmed on the Japanese cruise ship raised that country’s total to 33 cases. They were among 273 people tested because they had a cough or fever, which are symptoms of the virus, or had close contact with a man who got off the ship in Hong Kong and was infected.

The transmission to each person isn’t clear, and the others may have gotten the virus when they got off the ship at other port calls in Vietnam, Taiwan, Kagoshima and Okinawa. The ship returned to Yokohama, near Tokyo, Monday.

Thailand confirmed six more cases Tuesday, raising its total to 25. Two are motorcycle taxi drivers who had driven for Chinese tourists. Earlier a Thai taxi driver was also diagnosed with the virus. The cases are concerning because they suggest the virus can spread more easily between people than has been suspected.

...yep, 10 confirmed on a cruise ship docked in Tokyo Bay, everyone else there put on 14 day lockdown. And that ship NEVER even went to China.

...and still flights from China continue to land in the US.

We, and the rest of the world, continue to be about 2 to 3 weeks behind in responding, and soon, very soon, the chance of stopping the virus will no longer even exist.

Sadly, it looks like Trump listened to people who were either TOTALLY INCOMPETENT, or wanted him to fail, and they’re about to succeed in doing just that.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Get your emergency food supply laid in now...it’s almost too late. There already aren’t hardly enough truck drivers to deliver what we need now...if a major illness stops people from working for a week or two then we are in trouble. Stores will run out in two or three days...

I’m now good for month on food, along with everything else needed. My only concern is power, when the weather warms in Texas - it will get really yucky without A/C.

My only advice is that when the runs begin, it will be SUPER-FAST (think Black Friday) and expect quantities to be limited - starting then.

Coronavirus: Japan quarantines cruise ship after passenger tests positive
Share

Follow the latest updates of the outbreak on our timeline.

Japanese health authorities have quarantined Diamond Princess cruise ship after a passenger tested positive for the coronavirus in Hong Kong, China.

The epidemic has begun in the central Chinese city of Wuhan has so far killed 427 and infected 20,623 people.

The passenger started his journey from Yokahoma, Japan, on 20 January and left the ship in Hong Kong on 25 January.

The passenger, an 80-year-old man, tested positive for the coronavirus in Hong Kong six days later.

Japanese health officials are conducting a full review of all the crew and guests. Princess Cruises said the delay might last up to 24 hours.

Operated by Carnival Japan, the ship is currently on a 14-day round trip journey. The Diamond Princess ship has 1,045 crew and 2,666 passengers on board.

In a statement, Princess Cruises said: “The safety, security and well-being of all guests and crew is our absolute priority.

“The review of the arriving guests and crew by Japanese health authorities is standard practice after a guest tested positive for coronavirus and we are working closely with the local authorities to provide detailed records to facilitate their review.”

Japan has announced 20 confirmed cases of the coronavirus with no deaths so far.

Yesterday, Saint Lucia and Dominica denied entry of the cruise ship AIDAperla into their shores as they were carrying a large number of sick passengers on board.

Last month, approximately 6,000 passengers onboard Carnival Corporation’s Costa Smeralda were allowed to leave the ship after a Chinese passenger tested negative for coronavirus.

The ship was initially quarantined at Italy’s Civitavecchia port.

MY notes:

1) the index case left the ship on 25 January.
2) ships don’t have wet markets of exotic animals or Level-4 biohazard labs onboard.
3) other patients (10 at last count) are positive, NINE days after the index case left the ship
4) tell me where else a bunch of patients on board a CRUISE ship would’ve picked it up
(”tell her what ELSE you picked up in the Navy”)
5) H2H in a public, non-intimate setting *confirmed*

Prep now. Prepare to shelter in place for 2 months.

“Prep now. Prepare to shelter in place for 2 months.”

My prepping is done. Are you basing the 2 months on anything (although it does sound reasonable to me)?

We need a list of things to stock up on... and information. How long after the mail arrives before it’s safe to touch? How to ‘touch’ ATM machines... grocery carts?

Damn, I hadn’t thought about the mail. Probably give it a week. I have latex gloves that should help there.

Thanks!

2 months is a good estimate of how long it will take a wave to pass thru the U.S. Expect supply chain disruption during that period due to absenteeism. May see social disorder in areas prone to it as well. You can use the 2016 precinct results map to predict where they will be.....

1. Wear latex gloves.
2. Buy dry stuff your family eats anyway now. Spaghetti, rice, beans, ramen, chili, pb& j, flour, yeast, baking powder, bisquick, etc If this passes over, you can eat it later anyway. Check out the LDS lists for prep.
3. Buy motrin & Tylenol for fever - the hospitals will be crushed.
4. plant a garden.
5. pray.

other thoughts from others....?

The virus can live on latex gloves... and you still have to open the mail. I’m probably one of the last people who pays my bills with checks... but I’m going to change that and have bills paid directly out of my account.
