When homeless and drug addicts are using the system as shelter as places to shot up, I am not surprised people will avoid using the system unless forced to.

Haven’t there been numerous incidents of human waste being left on seats and in the middle of the aisle?

BART used to be terrific. My kids commute from the East Bay to the city and say it’s now a s^hole. Literally.

Personal protection on just about any form of public transportation is non-existent.

I am sure that they will conduct a “study” for $500,000 to determine the reason and propose solutions.

That “study” will be awarded to someone closely connected to a political leader.

An armed society is a polite society.

If thugs suspected even 5% of riders were armed, we wouldn't have such problems.

Alas, no Californians with the clout to obtain a CCW would condecend to riding BART.

bart is not safe for passengers
bart should allow concealed carry

also san francisco bay low density housing does not seem to be a good fit for rapid transit (rather, supports buses and electrified commuter rail)

I used to ride Seattle’s downtown bus system circa 2000-2008. Peak morning work commute times were fine. Afternoon started to get sketchy. Past 8pm no sane person would want to ride. It was horrible then, I can imagine now.

With people literally being attacked or stabbed while waiting on platforms... What do you think is going to happen?

I visited there a few months ago after not being there for about a decade. I’ll never go back. People sleeping in doorways, human excrement everywhere, needles in the gutters. Hope the people of SF like being a sanctuary city, because I think tourists are going to start visiting somewhere else. I know I am.

My wife used to work for Alaska airlines in Seattle and we would sometimes go on weekend “day trips” to places like Burbank airport, rent a convertible for the day, and come back that night. It was a lot of fun.

But one day we decided to visit San Francisco by flying to Oakland. We took the bus to the bart station and the crowd there gave us the willies. We’ve been all over the country but that felt so incredibly dangerous that we literally grabbed the next bus back to the airport and hightailed it back to Seattle.

This was about ten years ago. Now that my daughter left Studio City, we don’t expect to ever go to California again in our lifetime. I’ve lived in Vallejo, Napa and Anaheim (all in the 60’s). That state no longer has anything good to offer us and plenty of bad to offer.

They are also using the system as a toilet. You cannot be anywhere in that system where you cannot smell shit and piss.

To put it in percentages, BART’s ridership in 2019 was 15% lower than in 2015. “Non-essential” staff like security and cleaning services would be first in line for reductions to make up for the revenue losses.

Up until three years ago, BART from SFO to Walnut Creek was acceptable. Now, we drive, and more frequently, Uber as the city continues toeliminate parking.
