EVANSVILLE, Ind., -- Nearly half of state legislatures will consider bills in the near future to protect a person's right to wear hair naturally.
The bills -- introduced in 24 states -- are modeled after a California law put into effect Jan. 1 that bans discrimination based on hairstyle.
Proponents say employers, and even schools districts, often ban hairstyles historically worn by racial minorities -- like braids, dreadlocks and twists.
"Our hairstyles influence the way employers and teachers treat us," said Courtney McKinney, a spokeswoman for the Western Center on Law and Poverty, which advocated for the California law along with several other organizations.
"It can impact your education and your ability to get a job. That's why we need laws to protect our right to wear our hair the way it grows out of our heads," McKinney said.
Hair discrimination against black people has a long history in the United States.
Before the Civil War, enslaved people from Africa, for whom long hair was culturally important, were forced to shave their heads, said Wisconsin state Rep. LaKeshia Myers, a Democrat who introduced legislation to protect natural hairstyles.
"No child should be stopped from learning because of their hair," said Jade Magnus Ogunnaike, the campaign director for Color of Change, an online racial justice organization.
The push to pass such legislation is being spearheaded by a group called the CROWN Coalition, which stands for Creating a Respectful and Open Workplace for Natural hair.
Color of Change is a CROWN Coalition founding member, Ogunnaike said. Other founders are are Dove, the Western Center on Law & Poverty and the National Urban League.
The coalition, which formed about two years ago, chose to begin in California.

This has already passed here in Minnesota.
The way someone wears their hair affects how people.treat them so lets pass a law that says you cant treat anyone different for the way they wear their hair.. was the county board bored? And how do you prove you were discrimianted against because of your hair? Do you accuse someone of not liking your hair? Is this another rasta wanting a job at a restaurant but cant get hired because NO-ONE wants your dirty filthy smelly hair in their eggs? or will hair be on the menu just like bacon ?
I wouldnt want to sit near that.
No you wont, lets go dear
I’m going to get this off my chest but if you tell anybody I said it I shall deny it.
Perhaps it’s because I come from a family filled with hairdressers that I have some knowledge. Although we’re Caucasian, for sure I’ve been around plenty of hairdressers with expertise in doing black hair.
First, I think a hairstyle filled with pretty and neat braids is very lovely. I can’t imagine not hiring someone if they have a head with artful and well-worked braids.
BUT FOLKS THIS IS EXPENSIVE!!!!!
To do a head full of a Black person’s hair takes almost two hours (time varies of course, but take a look at how complicated some of those hairstyles are).
Cost is between $150-$200.
Again, nothing wrong with this.
But how many of these people are receiving some kind of public welfare? Food stamps? Welfare?
I don’t much know and hey, if it’s their money than spend it however.
Also note, most black women have beautifully manicured fingernails. That’s another fifty bucks every two weeks or thereabout.
I have mine own fingernails professionally manicured every two and a half weeks so I do quite understand feminine vanity.
But I am very suspicious about those complicated hairstyles along with fingernails and how the public dole might be helping keep up the vanity.
Approachable ? Best to keep this freak behind the scene of any business and that is still risky
Theres a lot of gray and white hair discrimination going on too!
The picture is kind of neatshows the hair style and its inspiration.
I’m curious and you should know the answer to my question. If a person’s hair is tightly braided how does one wash it and how often?
SPIDERHEADS UNITE!!
” the way it grows out of our heads.”
” hair was culturally important”
Does anyone know why the obama gals and, say, Gail King and the Oprah all have straight hair? I feel like they are appropriating my (white) culture.
NOPE!
I challenge the advocates for and legislators favoring the “natural hair” bills to go to Africa today and see for themselves how often the touted “natural hair” look is displayed.
While I do not challenge the idea that your hairstyle ought to be permitted to be what you choose, I do challenge the idea that those of black African descent have some “natural” preference what the “natural hair” style advocates claim to be “natural” to most “blacks” - which it is not.
Looks like “Cousin Itt” stuck his finger in a light socket LOL!
LOL!
Actually, he has a nice smile, but it’s hard to see it with all the hardware.
With all the stuff going on in schools today, this, to me, is nothing but .
.here i go again ....
nitpicking!!
There’s some workers at our local Trader Joe’s that look like him.
